The transcript of Kenji Sarukura’s lecture titled “Laws, Regulations and Ordinances Concerning the Environment and ESG, and the Importance of Managing their Requirements” was posted on Thomson Reuters website.

The outline of the lecture is as follows:
Date: Tuesday, December 5, 2023, 13:30 – 15:20
Host: Thomson Reuters KK and Ushijima & Partners
Venue: Head Office of Thomson Reuters KK (Atago Green Hills MORI Tower)

Nowadays people place importance on aspects of ESG and SDGs in corporate management, and it has become more and more important for companies to understand and properly address various laws and regulations concerning the environment and waste recycling as well as related ordinances, rules, guidelines, etc., of local governments.

On the other hand, there have been frequent enactments and amendments of laws, regulations and ordinances concerning energy saving, global warming countermeasures (greenhouse gas emissions), and waste recycling. It is not easy to be thoroughly and appropriately informed of them in a timely manner.

Ushijima & Partners and Thomson Reuters co-hosted a seminar titled “Recent Laws, Regulations and Ordinances Concerning the Environment and ESG, and the Importance of Managing their Requirements, Based on the Flood of New Regulations and Amendments” delivered by Kenji Sarukura, attorney-at-law of Ushijima & Partners (held on December 5, 2023).

This article summarizes the said seminar. It introduces recent environmental and ESG-related laws, regulations and ordinances, and explains the points to note for addressing such laws, etc., which can be helpful for formulating measures to avoid risks such as the risk of conducting an “act that used to be lawful but is now unlawful” or the risk of being subjected to an administrative disposition or penalty or incurring liability for compensation.
